What We Stock

Hardwood Planks

Sawn planks in thicknesses from 25mm to 100mm, in a range of native and urban species. We also offer PAR (Planed All Round) boards for projects that need a smooth finish straight away.

Sleepers

200mm x 100mm, available up to 5 metres long. Cut from heartwood — Douglas Fir, Larch, and Oak. No chemical preservatives. Suitable for raised beds, retaining walls, garden structures, and landscaping.

Outdoor Timber

Larch planks for decking and cladding. Whole and part trunks for play structures, garden features, and sculptural work.

Whole Trunks

We stock whole tree trunks for customers who need large-section timber for structural work, outdoor play equipment, or artistic projects. If you need something specific, tell us and we will see what we have or can source from upcoming tree work.

Species

Manchester's streets, parks, and gardens produce a remarkable variety of timber. Our stock changes with the seasons and the tree work being carried out, but we regularly hold:

  • Oak — the reliable standard for furniture, joinery, and outdoor use
  • Brown Oak — fungal staining gives a rich, dark character prized by furniture makers
  • English Elm — a species increasingly rare in large sections; distinctive interlocked grain
  • Ash — strong, flexible, excellent for tool handles and steam bending
  • Beech — hard-wearing with a fine, even texture; good for worktops and turning
  • Cherry — warm-toned, finishes beautifully; sought after for cabinet work
  • Pear — dense and fine-grained; traditionally used for carving and instrument making
  • Yew — rich colour, dramatic grain; small sections ideal for decorative work
  • Lime — soft, even texture; the carver's wood of choice
  • Cedar — naturally durable and aromatic; good for outdoor furniture and cladding
  • Tulipwood — easy to work, takes finishes well; useful for painted joinery
  • Curly Sycamore — rippled figure makes striking tabletops and feature pieces
  • Douglas Fir — strong softwood for sleepers and structural use
  • Larch — naturally durable softwood for decking, cladding, and outdoor construction

Stock changes regularly. If you need a particular species or size, call ahead and we will check what is in the yard.

How We Produce Timber

Every piece of timber we sell follows the same process:

Timber feedstock from tree maintenance
  1. Arrival — trunks come in from tree surgery operations across Greater Manchester
  2. Assessment — we assess each trunk for timber potential, species, and defects
  3. Metal detection — urban trees often contain nails, screws, and fencing wire. We scan every trunk before milling to protect the saw and the timber
  4. Milling — sawn on our Woodmizer bandsaw mill into planks, beams, or sleepers
  5. Air drying — stacked and stickered in the yard to begin the drying process
  6. Kiln drying — dried to a stable moisture content at Pendlebury
  7. Inspection — checked for quality before moving to covered storage
  8. Selection — customers visit and choose individual boards from our stock

This process takes time — months from felling to finished, dry plank — but it produces timber that is stable, properly dried, and ready to use.

Why Choose Local Timber

Timber from TreeStation is different from what you will find at a merchants or online. Here is why that matters:

  • Carbon stored, not released — timber locks up carbon for the life of whatever you build with it. Our timber has lower embodied energy than imported alternatives because it travels a few miles, not thousands
  • Clean manufacturing — a bandsaw mill produces planks, sawdust, and nothing else. No chemical treatments, no industrial byproducts
  • Renewable by nature — trees regrow. Our timber comes from managed tree surgery, not deforestation
  • Local economy — your money stays in Greater Manchester, supporting a social enterprise that provides training and employment
  • Character — urban trees produce timber with history. Unusual species, unexpected grain patterns, and the knowledge that your table or shelf was once a tree on a Manchester street

By buying TreeStation products, you are supporting a local and genuinely ethical project.
