Ethics and Sustainability

Genuinely driven by values, not marketing.

Not Greenwash

TreeStation is part of the growing movement towards living and working in an environmentally and socially conscious way. But we know those words are cheap. Every timber supplier has a sustainability page. What matters is what actually happens on the ground.

We are genuinely driven by values. Our community-owned structure means we answer to members and neighbours, not distant shareholders chasing quarterly returns. Our ethical commitments are not a marketing exercise — they are the reason the business exists.

What We Guarantee

These are practical commitments, not aspirations:

  • Zero woody waste to landfill. Every piece of timber that enters our yard gets used — as firewood, woodchip, planking, or biomass fuel.
  • We never buy imported timber. All our products are made exclusively from virgin wood sourced locally and sustainably, produced in our Gorton-based yard.
  • Our electricity comes from renewable sources.
  • We refuse biofuels derived from cleared forests.
  • We bank with ethically-minded institutions.
  • Surpluses are reinvested into the business, our staff, and the community.

How We Source Timber

Local timber delivery

All TreeStation products are made from virgin wood sourced locally and sustainably. We go further than most suppliers in Greater Manchester by keeping purpose-felled trees to an absolute minimum.

Our sourcing priority, in order:

  1. Tree work arisings from our own arboricultural operations
  2. Arisings from local contractors across Greater Manchester
  3. Timber from Local Authority tree work
  4. Sustainably managed woodland — trees free from Tree Preservation Orders, or felled under approved Forestry Commission grant schemes

This approach means the timber we use would otherwise be chipped, burned, or sent to landfill. By processing it into firewood, planking, and woodfuel, we extract maximum value from material that already needed to come down.

Most of our products are air-dried. Where kiln-drying is needed, we run a low-impact, biomass-powered on-site kiln — fuelled by our own offcuts and waste wood. The energy loop stays closed.

Fair Employment

Our ethics extend to how we treat the people who do the work. TreeStation employees receive fair pay, proper working conditions, and genuine opportunities for professional development. In an industry where casual labour and poor conditions are widespread, we believe doing right by our workforce is not optional — it is fundamental.

Affordable Products

Ethical does not have to mean expensive. We offer products at affordable prices across various grades, so Greater Manchester households and businesses can heat their homes and source timber without paying a premium for doing the right thing.

Respecting Biodiversity

We minimise waste and energy use across every part of our operations. Our tree work follows best practice to respect biodiversity — protecting habitats, nesting sites, and the wider ecosystem. Qualified ecologists contribute to our planning and decision-making.
