Biomass Woodchip

BSL-accredited woodchip fuel for biomass boilers, produced from arboricultural arisings across Greater Manchester.

We supply woodchip fuel for biomass boilers, produced from arboricultural arisings across Greater Manchester and processed at our Gorton yard using specialist Heizohack chippers. We have been on the Biomass Suppliers List (BSL) since August 2014, which means our fuel meets the sustainability criteria required for the Renewable Heat Incentive.

What We Supply

Biomass-grade woodchip produced from virgin wood. All material is locally sourced from tree surgery and woodland management across Greater Manchester. No demolition timber, no treated wood, no imported material.

We supply individual deliveries and ongoing supply contracts for schools, community buildings, housing schemes, estates, farms, and businesses running biomass heating systems.

Our chip is carbon lean — not technically carbon neutral, because processing and transport use some energy, but well over 60% lower in greenhouse gas emissions than the fossil fuel it replaces.

Specifications

  • Source: virgin wood from local arboricultural arisings
  • Processing: chipped on site using Heizohack chippers
  • Moisture content: ideal range 20–25%
  • Certification: BSL accredited (Biomass Suppliers List)
  • Contaminants: free from chemical and physical contaminants

Chip Size

Chip size affects how well your boiler feeds and burns. We can produce chip to suit your system's requirements. Tell us your boiler make and model and we will confirm what we can supply.

Moisture Content

Most biomass boilers work best with chip at 20–25% moisture content. If your system requires dry fuel (below 35% MC), we need approximately six months' notice to prepare stock. Let us know your specification early and we will plan accordingly.

Storage

Woodchip can be stored at ground level or below ground in hoppers. The key is keeping it dry and allowing airflow to prevent compaction and spoilage. We can advise on storage options based on your site.

Delivery

We deliver biomass woodchip across Greater Manchester. Our vehicles can tip directly into underground hoppers, open stores, and containers. We will work with you to find an arrangement that suits your site access.

For sites with difficult access or unusual store configurations, get in touch and we will discuss what is possible.

Renewable Heat Incentive

Government schemes have provided financial support for organisations and households generating renewable heat from biomass. Because TreeStation is BSL accredited, fuel purchased from us meets the sustainability criteria that these schemes require.

If you are exploring biomass heating or need a BSL-accredited supplier to maintain your eligibility for a support scheme, we can help. Call 0161 231 3333 to discuss your situation.

Is Biomass Right for You?

Biomass heating works well for buildings with a consistent heat demand and space for fuel storage. It suits:

  • Schools and community buildings
  • Housing developments with communal heating
  • Farm buildings and rural estates
  • Commercial premises not served by mains gas

It is less practical for small domestic properties with limited space, or where mains gas is already available and the building is well insulated.

Why Local Biomass Matters

TreeStation produces biomass woodchip from low-grade timber and arboricultural arisings — the branches, stumps, and trunk sections that cannot be used for sawn timber or firewood. This material would otherwise go to waste or to landfill.

We believe biomass is only appropriate when it comes from genuinely local, low-grade sources. Large-scale biomass imported from overseas plantations is a different proposition entirely — one we do not support. Our position is straightforward:

  • Use wood that is already being produced by necessary tree management
  • Process it locally, minimising transport emissions
  • Supply local, small-to-medium scale installations where biomass is genuinely the best heating option
  • Keep the economic benefit in Greater Manchester

The result is fuel that saves well over 60% of greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuel heating, produced from material that would otherwise have no use.

How to Order

Typical Costs

Biomass woodchip from TreeStation typically costs 2.5 to 3 pence per kilowatt-hour of heat produced. The exact price depends on the specification, quantity, and delivery requirements.

Get Started

  1. Tell us about your boiler — make, model, chip size requirement, and moisture content specification
  2. Tell us about your site — storage type, access, and delivery frequency
  3. We will confirm whether we can supply to your specification and provide a quote

Call 0161 231 3333 or email info@treestation.co.uk. If you need dry fuel (below 35% MC), please allow six months' lead time.
